GAC enters European market

GAC, a Chinese automotive manufacturer, is expanding into Europe and France, using the 2026 World Auto Show as a platform to introduce its brand and vehicles to European consumers. The company is positioning itself as a new player in the region with a focus on engineering and local production.

New vehicle unveiled for Europe

GAC is introducing the Aion UT Cross, a compact crossover designed specifically for European roads. Measuring 4.27 meters, the vehicle is built with a design center in Milan, Italy, and assembled in Graz, Austria, to meet local preferences and regulations.

Local content and regulatory challenges

Cédric Lacour, deputy general director of GAC France, stated that the Aion UT Cross currently includes 40% local content, with plans to increase this to 45% in the future. This aligns with potential European regulations that may require up to 70% to 80% of components to be sourced locally.

Pricing and distribution strategy

The Aion UT Cross is expected to be 15% to 20% cheaper than European competitors. GAC officially launched its operations in France on September 21, 2026, and plans to open 25 dealerships in October, aiming to reach 50 by the end of the year. The company aims to have 200 sales points by 2030.

After-sales service and logistics

GAC is emphasizing after-sales service with "GAC Care +," offering extended warranties and partnerships for roadside assistance. A spare parts logistics center in Rotterdam ensures high availability, with parts delivered within 36 to 48 hours. Parts not available locally are shipped from China and delivered within a week.

Market goals and environmental considerations

GAC France aims for a 3% market share by 2030, selling over 40,000 vehicles annually. While vehicles assembled in Austria do not qualify for the highest environmental score, the company offers a 300 euro compensatory aid to customers. The company is targeting both private buyers and local fleets, including taxi and VTC drivers, with agreements in progress for these sectors.
