Lakers lose first game of season

The Los Angeles Lakers ended their undefeated season with a 129-136 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers, marking their first defeat of the year. Despite a strong showing from Luka Doncic, who scored 41 points, dished out nine assists, and pulled down five rebounds, the Lakers struggled to maintain control throughout the game.

Defensive issues persist

The Lakers’ defense was a major concern, as their defensive rating remained at 113.7 points allowed per 100 possessions, placing them 19th in the NBA. Austin Reaves acknowledged the need for better communication and sharper execution on defense, while coach JJ Redick criticized the team’s adherence to the game plan and player management.

Offensive contributions uneven

Although Luka Doncic’s performance was historic, the support from his teammates was inconsistent. Austin Reaves added 26 points and seven assists, and Sandro Mamukelashvili contributed 17 points, but other players failed to provide enough offensive support to sustain the Lakers’ lead. Walker Kessler, in particular, struggled, scoring only 13 points and appearing to be in a scoring slump.

Late-game struggles cost the Lakers

The Lakers failed to protect a 10-point lead they had built in the third quarter against Portland. The Trail Blazers gradually took control and secured the win in the final period, with Damian Lillard hitting a crucial three-pointer with 42.8 seconds left to give Portland a six-point lead. The loss serves as a reminder that offensive success alone is not enough for the Lakers—they must improve their defensive discipline and execution in critical moments.
