Nerial, a game development studio known for the Reigns series and owned by Devolver, has announced it will stop its operations. The studio had been gradually reducing its workforce since 2021, and earlier this year, it announced a new spin-off titled Reigns: The Witcher, which was meant to be a last attempt to save the company. However, this project did not succeed in reversing the studio's financial difficulties. Nerial operated for 13 years and released 11 games, including the popular Reigns series, which features turn-based strategy gameplay centered around ruling a kingdom. The studio has now entered what it calls "hibernation," a term used to describe a temporary shutdown unless a major opportunity arises to revive the company. In a statement, Nerial said it had reached an agreement with its parent company, Devolver, to end all development activities. The team will now look for new opportunities, and the studio has encouraged its employees to seek employment with other game development studios. In its announcement, Nerial also expressed gratitude to the many individuals and organizations it worked with over the years, both within the studio and through partnerships with Devolver and other collaborators. The studio is best known for the Reigns series, but it has also developed other games such as Card Shark, a card game with a narrative twist, and The Crush House, a horror-themed puzzle game. While the closure of Nerial marks the end of an era for its employees and fans, the games it created will remain available for players to enjoy. The decision reflects the challenges faced by many independent game studios in the highly competitive gaming industry.
