A recently deleted post from a gaming group appears to hint at the development of a new AAA 2D fighting game, which many believe could be Injustice 3, the long-rumored sequel in NetherRealm Studios’ popular DC Comics-based fighting game series. NetherRealm, best known for Mortal Kombat, announced last year that it would no longer produce new content for Mortal Kombat 1, shifting its focus to a new project. This has led many to speculate that the studio is working on a new Injustice game, a series that has been the subject of rumors for years. The deleted post came from Good Gamer Group, a company that provides private, non-disclosure agreement (NDA)-protected playtests for upcoming games. According to EventHubs, the post described a major AAA 2D fighting game, a category that currently lacks any confirmed upcoming releases. The only major fighting games recently announced are Virtua Fighter Crossroads by Sega and the next Dead Or Alive game, both of which are 3D titles. The playtest location, Culver City, California, suggests the game is being developed by an American studio. Given that NetherRealm has primarily focused on AAA 2D fighting games, it is the most likely candidate. While NetherRealm is based in Chicago, its parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, has a headquarters in Culver City, where the playtest was held. Although Capcom, another major game developer with offices in Culver City, is also a possibility, it is unlikely to be involved, as it already has Street Fighter 6, a successful 2D fighting game with ongoing monetization through downloadable content and microtransactions. Earlier this year, NetherRealm’s head, Ed Boon, confirmed that work on a Mortal Kombat sequel is underway, but he also said that the team is "definitely doing more as well." This leaves open the possibility that the studio’s next project could be something else. Additionally, two Injustice voice actors revealed last year that they had recorded lines for Injustice 3. However, a separate DC-themed game called DCKO is set for 2027, but it is a free-to-play mobile game, not a AAA title. The biggest uncertainty is whether the new game will be called Injustice 3 at all. DC Studios CEO James Gunn has expressed interest in greater involvement with DC’s video games and has discussed plans with NetherRealm. This could signal a potential reboot of the Injustice series to align it with current DC movie projects. Whether it’s Injustice 3 or a new DC fighting game, it is expected to feature iconic characters like Superman and Batman in battle.
