Capcom, the Japanese video game company known for popular franchises such as Resident Evil and Street Fighter, has announced plans to evolve its proprietary game engine, the RE Engine, into an AI-powered platform. The company revealed details about its future development strategy during the "Capcom Open Conference RE : 2026," a technical event held on October 2. A key presentation at the conference was delivered by programmer Satoshi Ishida, who outlined a multi-phase project called "REX" aimed at modernizing the RE Engine for the next generation of game development. The REX project focuses on improving the efficiency of game development, enhancing performance, refining tools, and strengthening quality assurance processes. According to reports from the Japanese news website GameBiz, Capcom plans to implement these improvements gradually, ensuring a smooth evolution of the RE Engine. One of the notable aspects of REX is the inclusion of open-source components designed to train artificial intelligence systems. These components are integrated into the engine using the "most widely used programming language in the world," which is intended to make the system more accessible to both developers and AI. Capcom's long-term vision is to create games that are developed in collaboration with AI. This approach involves using AI to streamline and optimize various stages of development, rather than relying on AI to generate large volumes of content such as art or music. In a shareholders' meeting in March 2026, the company confirmed that it would not use AI-generated assets in its games but would instead use AI as a tool to improve productivity and efficiency in the development process. Currently, Capcom is researching how to apply AI in areas such as graphics, sound, and programming. 2026 has been a busy year for Capcom, with the release of three critically acclaimed games: Resident Evil Requiem, Pragmata, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword. In addition, the company has been involved in cinematic projects, including the film Resident Evil, directed by Zach Cregger, and Street Fighter, produced by Legendary, which is set for a theatrical release on October 14, 2026.
