Capcom, the Japanese video game publisher, has shared its vision for the future of the Resident Evil franchise, a long-running series of survival horror games that first launched in 1996. Jun Takeuchi, a producer at Capcom, outlined these plans in the recently published book Nikkei Entertainment! BIOHAZARD 30th Special, which marks the 30th anniversary of the franchise. According to Takeuchi, Capcom has been preparing for a new phase of the series since the release of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard in 2017, which marked a significant shift in the series' direction.
Capcom has been balancing its development by alternating between remaking older Resident Evil titles and creating new entries in the series. If upcoming remakes of Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil 1 are confirmed, then Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 may be the last main numbered titles available for remaking before the series moves into a new era. This new phase is being shaped by the influence of Resident Evil 7, which introduced elements such as the Umbrella Corporation and the Spencer family, as well as the return of Raccoon City, a key location in the original games.
Takeuchi explained that the inclusion of these elements in Resident Evil 7 was initially intended as a nod to fans, but the positive player response encouraged Capcom to expand on the concept in later games. This approach has continued in Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil Requiem, both of which have been praised for their storytelling and atmosphere. Resident Evil Requiem, the latest installment, brings players back to Raccoon City for the first time since its destruction in the original 1999 game. Players can also look forward to a remake of Resident Evil: Code Veronica in 2025, as well as a narrative expansion for Resident Evil Requiem that remains unannounced.
Capcom's strategy includes releasing remakes of earlier titles, such as Resident Evil 10, to keep the fanbase engaged over the long term. The next major release in the series, Resident Evil Veronica, is scheduled for 2027, continuing the franchise's legacy while introducing new content and experiences for players.
