AI assistant growth compared to social networks

Data journalist Samuel Bennett compared the growth of five AI assistants and major social networks on his website The News in Data on October 12. He overlaid their growth curves from their launch dates, showing how quickly each reached one billion users.

ChatGPT’s rapid rise to one billion users

OpenAI's ChatGPT reached one billion users in about 44 months, faster than TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. In contrast, Twitter (now X) never surpassed one billion users, peaking at 336 million in early 2018.

Early success and accelerated growth

Launched for free with the GPT-3.5 model, ChatGPT attracted its first million users in just five days, according to Sam Altman, OpenAI’s head. Its growth accelerated sharply in 2026, reaching 900 million weekly users by late February and surpassing one billion by August.

Global adoption and language diversity

OpenAI noted in a June 30 report that more than half of its active users interact in languages other than English. This highlights the global reach of the platform, even as it faces competition from other AI assistants.

Faster growth from Meta and Gemini

Meta AI reached one billion monthly users in just 20 months, while Google’s Gemini achieved the same milestone in 41 months. Both benefited from being integrated into existing ecosystems like WhatsApp and Android, which gave them a significant distribution advantage.

Erosion of ChatGPT’s market dominance

ChatGPT’s market share among AI applications fell below 50% for the first time by late May, according to Sensor Tower. Competitors like Gemini and Claude are gaining ground, with Gemini reaching 662 million monthly users and Claude at 245 million.
