Agricultural price indices released for August 2026

Insee and Agreste released the agricultural price indices for August 2026 on September 30. These indices track changes in the prices of agricultural inputs and outputs, providing insight into the financial pressures on farms and the broader agricultural sector.

Input prices rise sharply

The agricultural production input purchase price index (Ipampa) increased by 1.4% on a monthly basis in August, similar to the previous month. On an annual basis, the increase reached 8.2%, following 6.2% in July and 5.1% in June. This reflects a significant rise in the cost of goods and services used in farming.

Output prices show mixed trends

The agricultural production product price index (Ippap) gained 2.4% on an annual basis. However, excluding fruits, vegetables, and horticultural products, the increase was limited to 0.5%. This divergence highlights different trends in the prices of inputs versus outputs.

Energy and fertilizers drive cost increases

Energy and fertilizers are the main areas of increase in input prices. Energy prices jumped 50.5% on an annual basis, though the monthly increase slowed to 6.6% in August after 9.8% in July. Fertilizer and soil amendment prices increased by 15% on an annual basis, rebounding slightly in August after a decline in July.

Other farm expenses remain stable

Other expenses, such as animal feed, seeds, and crop protection products, saw smaller changes. Animal feed prices increased by 1.4%, while seeds and plants declined by 1.2%, and crop protection products by 0.9%. Maintenance and repair of equipment rose by 1.5%, and general expenses by 3.1%. Overall, intermediate consumption increased by 10% on an annual basis.

Crop prices surge, livestock prices fall

On the revenue side, crops benefit from strong price increases. In August, cereal prices at production jumped 22.1% on an annual basis, reaching their highest level since August 2023. Oilseeds increased by 16.3%, a peak since February 2023. In contrast, livestock prices show a decline, with milk prices down 10% and animal prices down 2.7%.

Food prices accelerate at the consumption stage

At the consumption stage, food prices increased by 1.4% on an annual basis in September, after 1.1% in August. Fresh products saw a sharp acceleration, with prices rising 9.5% compared to 5.9% the previous month. Excluding fresh products, the increase was limited to 0.4%, showing a mixed picture of price changes across different food categories.

Indices reflect different stages of the supply chain

The agricultural price indices measure different prices at different stages of the supply chain, from farm inputs to final consumer goods. These indices do not directly indicate which part of the chain absorbs the cost increases. To determine that, detailed data on production yields, negotiated prices, and margins would be needed.

Next indices to be released on October 30

The September agricultural price indices will be published on October 30, providing further insight into the evolving prices and pressures within the agricultural sector.
