According to a 2025 Ipsos study, 37% of French people prefer to take their vacations in September, compared to 32% for June and July, and 35% for August. This growing trend is attributed to several factors, including more affordable prices, fewer crowds, and a more pleasant climate. Travelers who choose September, sometimes called "septembristes," come from a variety of backgrounds, including active retirees, childless couples, self-employed individuals, young professionals, and remote workers. Experts predict this trend will continue to grow, with an expected 15% increase in September travelers this year. One of the main advantages of traveling in September is the lower cost, with some areas like the Arcachon basin experiencing a 40% drop in prices. This is especially appealing in a time when many people are dealing with tighter budgets. Fewer visitors also mean a more relaxed and less crowded experience, helping to avoid the summer rush and the problem of overtourism, where too many visitors can overwhelm a destination. The weather is also a factor, particularly after a summer marked by heatwaves, wildfires, and thunderstorms, making September a more attractive option for many. Dominique Lecea, a tourism consultant at In Extenso, notes that the profile of these travelers has expanded, and some destinations have successfully promoted their appeal during the autumn months. For example, the Côte d'Azur has effectively marketed September, especially to seniors, by emphasizing the cooler and calmer conditions after the summer season. This shift in tourist season is seen as beneficial for the industry, helping to spread out visitor numbers and potentially acting as a buffer during times of economic or environmental crisis.
