Winamp, the once-dominant MP3 player that shaped the digital music experience on Windows computers before streaming became mainstream, is set to make a comeback in 2027 as a subscription-based streaming service. This revival is the result of a partnership with Deezer, a major music streaming platform. The new Winamp service will include a monthly subscription fee, support for local music files, Internet radio, podcasts, and the ability to access music stored in the cloud. The original desktop application will remain available, with the new streaming service added after its launch. According to Winamp, the classic software still has over 40 million active users worldwide.
Deezer, which has been working to strengthen its business partnerships, reported a decline in new subscriptions from these deals in its first half of 2026. New subscriptions dropped to 3.1 million, a decrease of 800,000 compared to the previous year. Revenue from this segment also fell by 7.6 percent to 70.7 million euros, partly due to the end of a bundling deal with Mercado Libre, a large retail company in Latin America. Deezer has emphasized that rebuilding this part of its business through white-label deals—where third-party companies use Deezer's platform under their own brand—is a key strategy. Recent deals have included partnerships with Telenor, a telecom provider, and EDF, a French energy company.
The partnership between Winamp and Deezer was signed on July 1, just before the official announcement, and was presented to investors as part of Deezer's updated Deezer for Business program. In this white-label arrangement, Deezer will provide the streaming infrastructure and music catalog, while Winamp will maintain full ownership of its core product, branding, and direct relationship with its subscribers. Winamp does not have its own music licenses or streaming infrastructure, but the partnership gives Deezer access to a well-known brand. This collaboration avoids the earlier challenges Winamp faced in trying to launch a streaming service independently, which required complex integration deals that never came to fruition.
Winamp has been undergoing a transformation in recent years. A refreshed version of the software was released in 2022, followed by a period of brand management. In September 2024, Winamp made the classic player's source code available on GitHub, but the move was controversial. The initial license restricted the distribution of forks, and the repository was later deleted after criticism and the discovery of proprietary code from Dolby and Microsoft. Winamp has not yet announced pricing details or supported platforms for its 2027 streaming service, though it has described the model as "fundamentally different" from existing services. The company has hinted at a customizable interface, social features, and new tools for music discovery and organization. This marks the first time in nearly 30 years that Winamp will offer a premium subscription. If successful, the partnership with Deezer could represent a major turnaround for the service, which had nearly been shut down by AOL in 2013 before being sold to Radionomy.
