The Spanish used car market saw a slight slowdown in September 2026, with the resale of passenger cars and SUVs dropping by 0.6 percent to 184,051 units across all channels, according to data from Ganvam, the association representing both official and independent dealers. However, the first nine months of the year showed a 2.6 percent increase in used car transactions compared to the same period in 2025, with a total of 1,640,051 units sold. The market continues to favor used cars over new ones, with 1.8 used cars sold for every new car. Most segments of the market were affected by the slowdown, with short-term rental companies experiencing a 13.5 percent decline, selling only 12,600 units. In contrast, long-term rental companies saw a 26 percent increase, contributing more than 11,700 transactions. The private channel, which is the largest part of the used car market, saw a 1.2 percent drop in September, selling 122,310 units. Despite this, the private channel has been growing steadily since January, accounting for 65.6 percent of all transactions and seeing a 2.7 percent increase year to date, with 1.075 million used cars exchanged. The growth in the used car market has been driven mainly by rental companies, which saw a 16.5 percent increase in transactions to 103,700 units, and by imports, which rose by 7.1 percent to 107,840 units. Used 100 percent electric cars also showed strong performance, with a cumulative increase of 39.8 percent by the end of September, reaching 27,920 units. Used plug-in hybrids saw an even stronger rise, increasing by 46.9 percent since January to 43,762 units. These figures highlight the growing interest in newer, more environmentally friendly vehicles. Despite the rise in newer used cars, the majority of transactions still involve older models. Used cars no older than five years have increased by 5.2 percent since the beginning of the year and now represent 26 percent of the market. However, the bulk of sales—41.6 percent—still come from vehicles older than fifteen years. This indicates that while the market is evolving with the introduction of more modern and electric models, the demand for older, more affordable cars remains strong.
