Used car listings rise slightly in September 2026

French used car dealers reported a slight increase in their listings in September 2026, according to statistics compiled by AAA Data based on purchase declaration certificates. The total number of used cars listed reached 1,082,582 units, representing a 0.8 percent increase compared to August. However, this figure remains below the average observed since the beginning of the year 2026, which stands at 1,108,000 used cars.

Segment B and C-SUVs show contrasting trends

Segment B used cars still represent a quarter of the offer, with 278,563 units, despite a monthly contraction of 1.3 percent. C-SUVs saw a 2.6 percent increase, reaching 177,675 units, or 16.4 percent representation, placing them in second position. In terms of engine type, gasoline cars have lost ground on the used car fleets, with a decrease of 1.2 percent to 381,500 units. In contrast, MHEVs experienced the strongest growth, with about 85,600 used cars corresponding to a 10 percent increase in the offer.

Individuals and lessors contribute to supply

During September, 204,516 used cars were recorded by French dealers, a total equivalent to that of July and above the average of 195,800 cars observed during the first nine months of the year. Individuals contributed 76.4 percent (or 157,200 units) to the supply, which is less than the normal level. This figure is lower than the 76 percent recorded in March 2026. Lessors have injected 16,150 cars from LCD and 10,400 from LLD into the circuit, a total unmatched for LCD since February 2026.

Inflow by segment and engine type

Cars from segment B accounted for 26.7 percent (or more than 54,500 units) of the inflow, while diesel engines represented 35.5 percent (or 72,500 units). Used cars aged 8 to 15 years made up 23.2 percent of the inflow, according to AAA Data statistics.

Resale activity shows steady performance

In terms of outflow, 160,732 used cars were removed from the stocks through all possible channels. This figure is close to the average of 161,317 monthly resales observed since the beginning of the year 2026. Two age groups concentrated practically half of the transactions: professionals sold 38,141 used cars aged 8-15 years (or 23.7 percent) and 36,512 others aged 2-4 years (or 22.7 percent). The segment of very recent used cars (less than 6 months) outperformed the market trend, with 764 units resold, representing a 26 percent increase compared to the monthly average.

Thermal engines dominate resales

Thermal engines still dominate the resale market, with 61,720 of the resold cars running on gasoline (38.4 percent) and 51,660 running on diesel (32.1 percent). Regardless of the energy type, cars from segment B accounted for 30.5 percent (48,974 units) of the resales.
