One of the UK's oldest private schools, Ruthin School in Denbighshire, north Wales, has been placed on the market for £5 million after it closed due to financial difficulties. Founded in 1284, the school is one of the country’s oldest independent institutions and operated as a co-educational boarding school with 201 students. It had annual fees ranging from about £15,800 to £54,800 for full boarding. The school’s campus includes 12 buildings, a 30-bed boarding house, a sports field, and over 24 acres of land. It was purchased by Galaxy Global Education, a Chinese company, in the months leading up to its closure in July. This marks the second UK school that Galaxy has acquired and shut down in recent months. The property is being sold by Sanderson Weatherall, a surveyor and estate agent, who describe the listing as a "rare opportunity." The campus is centered around a Grade II listed main building from the 1850s, made of traditional materials like stone, brick, and rendered walls with slate roofs. The structure includes interconnected buildings and reflects the school's historic character. One of the buildings on the estate originally served as a police station and later a care home before becoming the Gladstone boarding house. The school was refounded in 1574 by Gabriel Goodman, the dean of Westminster, and has notable alumni including Julian Lennon, the son of John Lennon, who attended in the 1980s. The closure came suddenly, with students and staff being informed on the last day of the school year before the summer break. Ruthin’s deputy mayor, Anne Roberts, expressed her sadness and concern over the impact on the local economy, noting that the school was one of the area’s largest employers. The sale is being handled by FRP Advisory, a joint administrator, on behalf of Galaxy Global Education. The property includes over 18 acres of main campus land with a Grade II listed building, expansive boarding accommodation, and substantial sports facilities. The broader estate also includes an additional 24 acres of agricultural land, residential properties, and a separate boarding house in Ruthin town center. David Murray, a partner at Sanderson Weatherall, emphasized the historical significance of the estate, calling it a rare opportunity to either continue its educational legacy or explore alternative developments. The property overlooks an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers a mix of historic buildings and modern facilities. Potential buyers could consider repurposing the site for educational, residential, or commercial use, though the future of the land remains uncertain as the sale process begins.
