Maldivian seeks to lease Airbus A220s
The national airline of the Maldives, Maldivian, has started a consultation to lease up to two Airbus A220-300 aircraft. These planes are intended for use on regional international routes and are expected to be delivered by the end of 2027 and early 2028.Request for proposals published
Island Aviation Services Limited (IASL), which operates Maldivian, published a request for proposals on October 11 for the operational lease of up to two Airbus A220-300 aircraft. Interested parties have until October 28, 2026, to submit their proposals.Delivery schedule and lease terms
The first aircraft is expected to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2027, with a second aircraft arriving in the first quarter of 2028. The planes would be based at Velana International Airport in Male and leased for a period between six and twelve years.Flexibility in aircraft selection
Maldivian retains some flexibility in its choice of aircraft. While new aircraft are preferred based on age, flight hours, and usage cycles, IASL may also consider used aircraft. Evaluations must be completed by November 5, with final approval from the company’s board of directors.Cabin configuration and features
Maldivian plans to configure the A220-300 with two classes, including eight business class seats and 130 economy seats. The aircraft will also include in-flight entertainment and internet connectivity, fitting within the typical 120 to 150 seat range for this model.Focus on regional international routes
The A320 currently serves routes to India and Bangladesh, while long-haul flights use the A330-200. The A220 project aims to modernize the regional international segment, separate from domestic services that rely on smaller aircraft and seaplanes.
