Troy Deeney, a former professional footballer and current analyst, has raised concerns that Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, might be considering moving on from striker Viktor Gyokeres. Gyokeres, a 27-year-old from Sweden, joined Arsenal a year ago with high expectations after the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who had been a key scorer for the team. Gyokeres had a solid first season, scoring 22 goals across all competitions, but he has not fully secured Arteta’s trust. There were reports that Arteta had shown interest in signing Benjamin Sesko, a Slovenian forward, instead. Kai Havertz, a German international who joined Arsenal in the summer, has regained his form and fitness, and is now the preferred center forward under Arteta. Havertz has effectively taken over the role that was expected of Gyokeres, and in the first two Premier League games of the season, Gyokeres was not even used. His recent performance in Arsenal’s match against Chelsea was described as error-prone, leading to criticism from Deeney. Deeney criticized Gyokeres's performance, saying, "Watch his highlights (against Chelsea), wow, it's like a horse trying to control a ball. It's a limitation problem. This guy gets credit for running the channels, so many times the ball comes up to him and bounces off him." He added that while Gyokeres was brought in to provide an additional scoring option, Arsenal now has players like Havertz and Martin Odegaard, who can link play and contribute more effectively. Deeney suggested that Arteta might be questioning the value of keeping Gyokeres, given his age and lack of improvement in technical and tactical aspects. Havertz, on the other hand, is performing well and has earned praise from Arteta. After his display against Chelsea, the manager praised Havertz in a post-match press conference, saying, "He looks happy, he looks settled, happy, and some great things have happened in his personal life as well. He feels fit, he’s training every day and has this routine right now. He’s scoring goals, but not only that – he’s also doing amazing work for the team." This indicates that Havertz is now a key player for Arsenal, potentially reducing the need for Gyokeres in the starting lineup.
