Used electric car transactions rise

Used electric cars have become more affordable, with a 27% increase in transactions recorded in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, according to a barometer conducted by the National Association for the Development of Electric Mobility (Avere-France) and the patronal organization of the automotive services (Mobilians).

Return of leased vehicles boosts market

This growth is partly due to the return of vehicles from long-term lease (LLD) and company fleets to the market. The battery, the most expensive component of an electric car, is generally guaranteed for eight years or up to a maximum mileage of 160,000 km.

Reconditioned batteries gaining traction

Reconditioned batteries are beginning to appear, and researchers, including those from the Gustave-Eiffel–ENTPE University, have published reassuring data on battery lifespan and aging. A study by Arval, based on the analysis of 24,000 batteries, shows that they retain, on average, 93% of their capacity after about 70,000 km.

Battery health assessment becomes standard

To check the battery condition, the State of Health (SOH) has become an established indicator. It is a percentage estimating the remaining capacity of the battery compared to its new state. However, a study by researchers from the National University of Kyungpook (South Korea) suggests that the SOH could slightly overestimate the actual condition of the battery and should be supplemented by other elements, such as the vehicle's history or an independent diagnosis.

Technological evolution affects used cars

Used electric cars also require consideration of technological evolution. Unlike thermal models, electric cars benefit from improvements with each new generation, leading to increased ranges and decreased charging times. A model marketed four or five years ago may appear significantly outdated in terms of these two aspects.

Key features influence usability

Another characteristic to check is the maximum power of fast charging in direct current (DC). Two cars with a similar range may require different stop times on the highway depending on their charging speeds. A heat pump, which allows for more efficient cabin heating and significantly limits energy consumption in winter, is present in some models but absent from others.

Odometer reading indicates wear

The odometer reading is also important, as an electric car, despite having fewer mechanical parts, still consists of thousands of components that age with time and use. The number of kilometers on the odometer can indicate potential repair costs.

Software updates affect long-term value

Electric cars are also connected computers, whose features can evolve through software updates. Buyers must ensure that the vehicle continues to benefit from this software tracking. Some connected services are offered for a limited period after purchasing a new vehicle, and their renewal may become paid.

Six models stand out in the market

Six used electric car models are worth considering: the Renault Zoe, Peugeot e-208, Fiat 500e, Renault Megane E-Tech electric, Tesla Model 3 Propulsion, and Tesla Model Y Propulsion. Each offers different features and price points, with the Tesla models being particularly suitable for long-distance travel due to their large range and access to the Superchargers network.
