At the Magasins Généraux in Pantin, the collective Angels Front has created an immersive experience called Die & Retry, which explores how people can resist what they call an "information war." The installation is part of a one-month residency exhibition and was created by Flora Bouteille and Victor Villafagne, who formed the collective in 2023. The work blends elements of video games, role-playing, simulation, social experiments, and reality television. It is described as having a neo-situationist character, drawing from the 1950s and 1960s avant-garde movement that aimed to challenge traditional structures of society. The scenario of Die & Retry centers around a "cognitive war," where attempts are made to capture more attention from people each day using social networks, artificial intelligence, deepfakes, and other conditioning technologies. The experience offers participants a chance to resist an increasingly aggressive and invasive spectacle-driven society. The stage is equipped with smartphones, sound devices, multi-cameras, infrared sensors, and facial recognition technology, creating an environment that resembles an intimate apartment. A panel of six actors-performers, known as "Family A22," chosen for their improvisation skills, interacts with an audience that can be present on site or watch via a streaming screen. The audience can choose to become a "player character," propose interaction scenarios, invent new rules, or simply observe. The challenge presented in Die & Retry is to resist the influx of technological artifacts and manipulations, distinguish truth from falsehood, and regain control over one's experience in a technologically driven world. The backstage and rehearsals are also open to visitors, allowing them to see the process behind the immersive experience. This residency exhibition follows Simulacres, a collective exhibition that recently ended at the Magasins Généraux. Its goal was to raise awareness of the many illusions made possible by digital and increasingly advanced new technologies. The residency exhibition was initiated by Anna Labouze and Keimis Henni, who also work within Artagon, an artistic incubator that supports a new generation of artists in Pantin and Marseille. Angels Front is also known for creating Cannibales, a similar experience presented recently at the Pernod Ricard Foundation and the Villette, which exposed the mechanisms of predatory capitalism. Die & Retry aims to outwit the existing cognitive manipulation system through a playful and preventive approach, teaching people how to anticipate and resist the effects of new technologies. The exhibition is described as a "guaranteed public utility workshop" and references a phrase from Guy Debord’s The Society of the Spectacle (1967): "In the really overturned world, the true is a moment of the false." Die & Retry, part of Angels Front’s residency exhibition, runs from October 8 to November 8, 2026, at the Magasins Généraux in Pantin. Free entry is available, but reservations are recommended. More details about hours and how to reserve a spot can be found on the venue's website.
