Efforts to create a unified rail network across Europe are gaining momentum, with high-speed train services connecting major cities like Rome, Milan, and Munich moving closer to reality. Commercial services are expected to launch by summer 2027, with trial runs of new high-speed trains already underway on European rail lines. Italy’s state railway, Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), is testing routes between Berlin and Munich, as well as Salzburg and Vienna, in partnership with German and Austrian rail operators, Deutsche Bahn and ÖBB.
Trenitalia, the Italian rail company, will introduce its Frecciarossa 1000 high-speed trains to provide services between Germany and Austria. Initially, four routes will operate on existing lines connecting Milan to Munich and Rome to Munich. The trip from Milan to Munich is expected to take about six and a half hours, with stops in cities like Brescia, Verona, and Innsbruck. The Rome to Munich route will take approximately eight and a half hours, with similar stops along the way.
Trenitalia and Deutsche Bahn are working together to train drivers and exchange technical knowledge to ensure the success of the new rail service. By December 2028, ten more connections are planned to link Milan, Rome, and Munich with Naples and Berlin. The FS Group believes this expansion will meet growing demand for travel to other European cities, including Frankfurt and Krakow.
Gianpiero Strisciuglio, CEO of the FS Group, said the test runs in Germany and Austria represent a key step toward achieving the company’s goal of making trains the preferred mode of transport in Europe. He emphasized that the partnership with Deutsche Bahn and ÖBB is advancing the development of a high-speed rail network that connects people, regions, and economies across the continent. In addition, FS has ordered 19 new trains through its subsidiary Trenitalia France, aiming to challenge Eurostar’s dominance over the Channel Tunnel by launching high-speed services between Paris and London starting in 2029.
