Instacart, a popular grocery delivery service, has introduced Clementine, a new AI-powered assistant designed to help users decide what to cook while staying within their budget. Clementine can take conversations, grocery lists, or recipes and turn them into ready-to-buy shopping carts. For example, users can ask it questions like "high-protein, easy dinners for two" or "order my usuals," and Clementine will respond with a recipe and a list of items that can be added to the cart with just a tap. The assistant ensures that recipes are based on what is currently available in the user's selected store, making the suggested meals more practical to prepare. Users can also remove items they already have in their pantry before adding the rest to their cart.
Clementine takes into account user preferences set in its preference center, such as nut-free, vegetarian, or gluten-free recipes. Beyond helping with dinner ideas, it can also assist in restocking pantry items by using data from previous orders to suggest items that can be quickly added to the cart. Additionally, users can upload a photo of a handwritten grocery list or a screenshot of a digital list, and Clementine can convert it into a ready-to-shop cart.
Instacart explains that Clementine can generate personalized recipes or pull from trusted publishers. It tailors recommendations to each household’s preferences, including dietary needs like gluten-free, vegetarian, nut-free, or organic options. The AI assistant also highlights relevant deals and promotions while suggesting lower-cost alternatives. According to a report, orders placed with Clementine often exceed the average basket size of $115, likely because it is so convenient to pay for everything it recommends.
Instacart is not the only grocery delivery app using AI to simplify the shopping experience. Uber Eats and DoorDash have also introduced similar AI assistants that can convert natural-language requests and grocery lists into personalized carts. Additionally, Instacart has partnered with major tech companies to integrate grocery shopping into platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and AI Mode in Google Search, making it easier for users to shop without leaving their preferred apps.
