Insta360 has released a software update that enhances the internal zoom capability of its Luna Ultra camera, increasing it from 12x to 15x, which is equivalent to a 300 mm focal length in traditional photography. This update allows users to capture more detailed shots from a distance without needing to physically move closer. As part of the same update, Insta360 introduced an optional Ultra Telephoto Lens that adds a 1.5x magnification factor. When attached, this lens extends the camera’s zoom to 22.5x, or an equivalent 450 mm focal length, allowing for even more detailed distant shots. The lens covers a focal range from 90 mm to 450 mm and blocks the main lens when in use, meaning the camera can only use the telephoto lens when it is attached. The enhanced zoom capabilities of the Luna Ultra are achieved through advanced image processing chips and AI-based image reconstruction technology called AI Remosaic. However, it is still classified as digital zoom, meaning the image quality may not match that of true optical zoom. Compared to the DJI Osmo Pocket 4P, which uses an optical telephoto lens equivalent to 60 mm and reaches up to 240 mm with digital zoom, the Luna Ultra now offers a significantly longer reach when using the Ultra Telephoto Lens. The Luna Ultra is now available as a bundled package with the Ultra Telephoto Lens for 839 euros, which includes a carrying case. The lens will be sold separately for 54.99 euros, though it is currently listed as out of stock. The software update is available for free through the Insta360 app. In addition to the zoom improvements, Insta360 has introduced a new “Stage Mode” specifically designed for capturing concerts and performances from a distance. This mode is optimized for handling lighting conditions and crowd movement, offering two audio options: one that focuses on sound coming from the stage and another that captures the overall ambiance of the venue. The Luna Ultra was launched in June as Insta360’s first stabilized gimbal camera for vlogging, developed in collaboration with the renowned optics brand Leica. At the time of its launch, it was positioned as a direct competitor to DJI’s Osmo Pocket series, which had not yet released its own telephoto vlog camera. Insta360 has also released a more affordable version of the Luna Ultra called the Luna Pro. However, the company is currently facing legal challenges from DJI, which has sued Insta360 to block the sale of Luna cameras in the United States. The lawsuit highlights the competitive nature of the compact vlog camera market and raises questions about intellectual property rights in the industry.
