Insta360 has launched the Luna Pro, a new single-lens pocket-sized gimbal camera designed to compete with the popular DJI Osmo Pocket 4. The Luna Pro is similar to Insta360's flagship model, the Luna Ultra, but it features a single 20mm fixed focal length lens instead of the dual-lens setup used in the Ultra. This change makes the Luna Pro more compact—about half an inch shorter and 20 grams lighter. The device includes a 1-inch CMOS sensor, a high-quality Leica Summicron lens (f1.8/20mm), and supports high-resolution video recording in formats such as 8K/30, 4K/120, and FHD/240. It also offers 4K/30 vertical video, which is especially useful for social media creators who often shoot in portrait orientation. Priced at $599.99 in the US, the Luna Pro is $170 cheaper than the Luna Ultra, though the price difference is smaller in the UK, where it's less than £50. The main technical difference between the two models is that the Luna Pro uses digital zoom up to 4x, which is achieved by cropping within the sensor rather than using a true telephoto lens. This means it has less reach and less background blur compared to the Ultra's 6x lossless zoom. Additionally, the Luna Pro uses a dual-chip setup instead of the Ultra's triple-chip design, which could affect its performance in low-light conditions. In terms of video quality, the Luna Pro is described as crisp and high-resolution, with bright and saturated colors. Its f1.8 aperture provides good depth of field and subject separation, offering a slight edge in bokeh (the soft blur of the background) compared to the Osmo Pocket 4. However, the Osmo Pocket 4 is noted for having richer color depth. Both cameras are very similar in image quality, with the Luna Pro showing slightly sharper details and better blacks in casual testing. The Luna Pro supports Dolby Vision and i-Log recording, which are useful for color grading and tuning. However, in bright lighting, the Luna Pro may overexpose in standard color mode, though this can be corrected using the i-Log feature. One of the Luna Pro's standout features is its 4K portrait mode, which allows for 4K/30 video in portrait orientation. This feature is not available on the Luna Ultra or the Osmo Pocket 4, though it is expected to be added to the Luna Ultra soon. The Luna Pro also includes a detachable front panel that acts as a wireless remote and microphone, which is more advanced than DJI's FrameTap accessory. While the battery life is reported to be around 90 minutes when recording in 8K with the screen on, this is less than the advertised 240 minutes for 1080p recording. The Luna Pro is aimed at social media creators and general users who want a balance of features and performance. While it lacks the second lens of the Luna Ultra, it offers a more affordable option with native 4K portrait mode. The choice between the Luna Pro and the Luna Ultra may depend on whether users need the extra zoom and processing power of the Ultra. Compared to the DJI Osmo Pocket 4, the Luna Pro has slightly less zoom and color depth but offers better tracking and stabilization. This makes it a strong option for users who prioritize smooth video and easy control features like the detachable touchscreen.
