Order for more trains announced

The transport authority in the Västra Götaland region, Västtrafik, ordered 35 additional Avelia Stream Nordic X80 trains from Alstom on September 29, 2026, for approximately 350 million euros. This decision was made under an option included in a framework contract signed in 2018, which allowed for future purchases of more trains.

Total number of trains increases

This order will bring the total number of X80 trains for SJ Götalandståg, a subsidiary of operator SJ, to 80. SJ Götalandståg operates the Västtågen commuter and regional trains in the region, providing services to both urban and rural areas.

History of the X80 train procurement

In 2018, 45 X80 trains were initially ordered from Bombardier, a Canadian company. However, the order was transferred to Alstom, a French multinational corporation, in 2021. This shift was part of a broader agreement to ensure the continued production and delivery of the trains.

Features and capabilities of the X80 trains

The X80 trains are designed for high-speed travel, capable of reaching up to 200 km/h, and have a seating capacity of 270 passengers. They feature level access for people with disabilities, as well as dedicated spaces for wheelchairs, strollers, and bicycles. These trains are built to withstand Sweden’s harsh winter conditions, including temperatures as low as -40 °C and up to 80 cm of snow.

Enhancing suburban services

Equipped with regenerative braking, which helps reduce energy consumption, the X80 trains are expected to improve service efficiency in the suburbs of Gothenburg, especially along routes to Varberg and Kungsbacka. The first X80 trains were introduced into commercial service in May 2026, marking a significant upgrade to the regional rail network.
