Alstom, a French multinational company specializing in rail transport, announced on September 28 that it has received an order for 35 additional Avelia Stream Nordic X80 railcars from Västtrafik. Västtrafik is the regional transportation operator in Västra Götaland county, which includes the city of Göteborg in southwest Sweden. This order is part of an existing framework contract signed in 2018, and the total value of the contract is approximately 350 million euros. Västtrafik has now ordered a total of 80 railcars under this agreement. The Avelia Stream Nordic railcars are designed to operate in extreme weather conditions, including up to 80 cm of snow and temperatures as low as –40°C. Each railcar consists of three carriages and provides a total of 270 seats. They are capable of reaching speeds of 200 km/h and are equipped with "regenerative" braking, a system that recaptures energy during braking and reduces overall energy consumption. The first batch of Avelia Stream Nordic railcars was delivered in the spring of 2026 after several months of testing on Västtrafik's network. These railcars are now in service on the regional railway network of Västra Götaland, improving connectivity and reliability for passengers in the region. The remaining railcars will be delivered over the coming years, ensuring a gradual expansion of the fleet. This contract highlights Alstom's ongoing commitment to providing advanced rail technology tailored to the specific needs of regional transportation networks. The Avelia Stream Nordic railcars are part of a broader initiative to modernize and enhance public transport infrastructure in Sweden, with a focus on sustainability and efficiency.
