A physician and medical director at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, Dr. Idris Evans, 46, was killed in a double stabbing at his home in Edgewood Borough on Thursday. According to police, Dr. Evans and his wife were attacked while they were asleep in their home along Linden Avenue. A suspect was taken into custody at the scene, and court documents indicate that the victim's wife told officers they were attacked by a man wielding a kitchen knife. She described the man as wearing only underwear and saying "being God." During the attack, she reportedly yelled for their two children, aged 8 and 12, to leave the house and seek shelter with a neighbor. The Allegheny County Police Department was called to the scene around 12:30 a.m. and found both Dr. Evans and his wife suffering from stab wounds. They were taken to the hospital in critical condition, but Dr. Evans later died. The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway, was found behind a nearby home with cuts to his hand and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Hemingway has been charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, and trespassing. Police said he was apprehended at the scene. Dr. Evans was described by a UPMC spokesperson as a dedicated caregiver and a valued member of the hospital and university communities. He served as the medical director of the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team at UPMC Children's Hospital and was an assistant professor of critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. A neighbor, Sandra Trappen, who lives near the scene, said she was shocked to find the suspect hiding in her backyard. She described the area as not well-manicured and noted that the suspect had concealed himself there before being found injured and bleeding. Police have referred to the incident as a tragic event in the small, close-knit community of Edgewood Borough. They urged residents to be thoughtful about what they share about the case, warning that rumors, graphic details, speculation, and photographs can be harmful to those directly affected and others in the neighborhood. The community is reportedly feeling shaken by the violence, and authorities are asking for the public's support and discretion during this difficult time.
