Lyon reinforces security ahead of Halloween protests, imposing curfews and banning weapons in city center.
Security measures in Lyon ahead of protests
On the eve of planned demonstrations on Saturday, October 31, the prefect of the Rhône, Étienne Guyot, announced enhanced security measures in the city center to address the risk of urban violence. These steps followed a meeting between the state representative and local economic stakeholders in Lyon, including shop owners, mall managers, and hospitality and restaurant professionals.Curfew imposed on minors
A curfew for unaccompanied minors was introduced for part of the Lyon peninsula, from 11:00 PM on Saturday to 6:00 AM on Sunday. Those under 18 will not be allowed to be in public spaces in the designated area unless accompanied by a legal guardian or an adult.Restricted areas and activities
The affected areas include Terreaux, the City Hall, Cordeliers, and Bellecour, as indicated on a map released by the prefecture. During this time, gatherings, demonstrations, processions, parades, and assemblies will be banned in the peninsula.Reasons for the restrictions
The prefecture cited “calls to commit acts of violence in the city center of Lyon relayed by radical groups” as the reason for the measures, linking them to social media mobilization efforts and Halloween-related activities.Prohibition on weapons and protective gear
A third measure prohibits carrying or transporting ammunition and objects that could be used as weapons without a legitimate reason, as well as personal protective equipment designed to resist law enforcement actions, throughout Lyon from 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM on October 31.Increased police presence
More than 1,000 security forces will be deployed in Lyon on Saturday to manage the mobilization and ensure the safety of residents and businesses, following a call from the Ministry of the Interior to remain vigilant about face concealment and the use of objects that could be turned into weapons, even as part of a costume.
