Winter driving rules apply to 193 Loire communes

From November 1 to March 31, drivers in 193 communes of the Loire department must use winter-specific equipment such as tires or chains to prepare for snowy conditions. The requirement is part of a national law aimed at improving road safety during cold weather.

Equipment standards are strictly defined

Drivers must use winter tires with the « 3PMSF » certification or removable anti-slip devices like chains or snow socks. The older « M+S » marking is no longer acceptable. Four-season tires with the « 3PMSF » symbol are allowed, and vehicles with studded tires are exempt. Heavy trucks and commercial vehicles must also comply, with specific rules depending on their type.

Regulation applies selectively across the department

The 193 communes affected by the rule were chosen based on altitude and local conditions. Some areas in the piedmont region are exempt, and road signs mark the start and end of regulated zones. Drivers should check their route rather than relying solely on their place of residence, as the rule may apply even if they live outside the affected communes.

Preparation and safe driving are emphasized

Authorities recommend testing chains or socks at home to avoid issues on the road. Even with proper equipment, drivers must adjust their driving style by reducing speed and increasing safety distances. Priority should be given to snowplows and salt spreaders, and the regulation is part of a broader strategy to maintain traffic flow during harsh weather.

List of affected communes provided in official documents

Annex 2 of the prefectural decree DT-21-0351 lists all 193 communes under the winter driving regulation. The list includes areas like Aboën, Ailleux, and Saint-Étienne, among many others. Drivers planning to travel through these regions should be aware of the specific requirements to avoid penalties.
