Winter driving rules apply to specific roads

Since November 1, 2026, certain roads in Claix and Varces-Allières-et-Risset, located south of Grenoble, require vehicles to be equipped with winter tires or alternative snow traction devices. This requirement is set to last until March 31, 2027, and applies every winter during the same timeframe.

Rules target specific road sections

The prefectural decree, published on January 12, 2026, specifies that the regulation applies to particular road segments rather than the entire territory of the two communes. The focus is on areas that lead to hillside regions, where snow or ice can make driving more challenging.

Three routes affected in Claix

In Claix, three specific routes are included in the decree. These include the route du Peuil, the chemin du Gampas, and the chemin de Savoyères, each with defined starting points and directions. These roads are included in the regulation to ensure safe travel in winter conditions.

Two routes affected in Varces-Allières-et-Risset

In Varces-Allières-et-Risset, the decree applies to the roads of Saint-Ange and Saint-Imbert. Drivers using these roads must ensure their vehicles are equipped with appropriate winter gear before entering them during the winter period. This is particularly relevant for those making short trips from the southern part of the Grenoble area.

Grenoble not included but nearby roads are

While Grenoble itself is not included in the decree, several roads near the city are affected on specific sections. These include the route de la Chartreuse, the route de Quaix, and the route towards Saint-Jean-le-Vieux. Drivers starting from Grenoble may quickly enter a regulated area.

Equipment options for private vehicles

Private cars, light commercial vehicles, and campers can use either four tires marked with the 3PMSF symbol or carry metal chains or snow socks for at least two driven wheels. The older "M+S" marking is no longer sufficient, and four-season tires must have the 3PMSF symbol to qualify as winter equipment.

Rules for heavy vehicles and signage

For heavy vehicles with trailers or semi-trailers, anti-skid devices must be carried even if the vehicle is equipped with winter tires. The B58 and B59 road signs mark the entry and exit of the regulated areas, and the Isère prefectural decree requires these signs to be in place for the regulation to take effect.

Regulation remains in effect regardless of weather

The requirement is in effect until March 31, 2027, regardless of whether snow is present on the roads. Drivers must ensure their vehicles are equipped for the entire trip, especially when traveling to mountain areas that are fully covered by the regulation.
