Verstappen considers Le Mans reunion with Ricciardo

Max Verstappen, the four-time Formula 1 world champion, has not ruled out the possibility of racing with his former Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. However, he emphasizes that any such collaboration would require significant preparation, which conflicts with his current commitments.

Ricciardo's retirement and Ford role

Daniel Ricciardo officially retired from racing in September 2025 after leaving Formula 1 in 2024. He now serves as Ford Racing’s global ambassador, a role that follows a complicated career transition, including a brief return to Red Bull in 2023 and a later regret over his 2018 move to Renault.

Ricciardo's desire for a controlled exit

In an interview on the podcast Beyond The Grid, Ricciardo expressed a wish to end his racing career on his own terms. While he is not interested in a full return to competition, he mentioned a preference for participating in a special event like the 24 Hours of Le Mans, rather than a full season.

Verstappen's interest in Ricciardo as teammate

Ricciardo named Verstappen as one of his top choices for a potential Le Mans partnership. Verstappen responded humorously but noted that such a venture would need thorough preparation, which he currently cannot commit to due to his existing obligations.

Le Mans as a unique challenge for Verstappen

Verstappen acknowledges that Le Mans presents a different level of difficulty compared to other endurance races he has participated in, such as the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. He feels his current schedule does not allow the time needed to prepare adequately for such a challenge.

Ford's potential role in the partnership

Ford, which partners with Red Bull in Formula 1 and is set to compete in the Hypercar category, could facilitate a collaboration between Verstappen and Ricciardo. However, Verstappen insists that any participation must be aimed at a realistic chance of victory, not just for the experience.

Ricciardo's openness to other drivers

Ricciardo has also considered including Sebastian Vettel in a possible Le Mans project. He acknowledges that the competitive drive returns once the helmet is on, suggesting that the appeal of racing remains strong even after retirement.

Future plans remain uncertain

For now, no joint participation in Le Mans is planned. Ford Racing needs time to establish itself in the World Endurance Championship and prepare for the 2026 season. The possibility of Verstappen, Ricciardo, and possibly Vettel competing together remains open, depending on timing, preparation, and resources.
