Verstappen considers Spa 24 Hours entry

Max Verstappen, the four-time Formula 1 world champion, is considering entering the 2027 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, potentially driving a Mercedes GT3 for his team Verstappen Racing. The race, scheduled for June 24 to 27, falls between the Portuguese and British Grand Prix events on the Formula 1 calendar.

Verstappen’s Belgian roots and connection to Spa

Verstappen, who was born in Belgium to his mother Sophie Kumpen, a former karting driver, has a deep connection with the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. He described it as his favorite and emphasized the importance of participating in the event, noting the significance of racing in his home country.

Experience in endurance racing

Verstappen has already gained experience in endurance racing through his participation in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring in May. He joined a team that included Dani Juncadella, Lucas Auer, and Jules Gounon, though their race was cut short by a transmission failure. Despite the setback, he expressed a growing interest in endurance racing.

High level of competition in endurance racing

Verstappen acknowledged the high level of competition in endurance racing, noting that he has raced against experienced drivers in various categories. He emphasized the need to progress and prove himself against the best drivers in the paddock, highlighting the challenge and excitement of the sport.

Verstappen balances F1 and endurance racing ambitions

While Verstappen is currently focused on his Formula 1 commitments with Red Bull, following recent victories in Malaysia and Singapore, he has clear ambitions beyond Formula 1. He aims to gain experience in other racing disciplines without compromising his F1 career, with the 24 Hours of Spa potentially being his next major endurance challenge.
