A new digital media platform named WASSI MÉDIA launched on September 28, offering free access to a variety of content, including programs, fiction, documentaries, and children's shows. Designed specifically for the island of Mayotte, the platform provides content that is accessible through the tools young people use daily, such as smartphones. Developed by a local Mayotte-based developer, the platform employs a range of local professionals, including technicians, animators, scriptwriters, directors, and guest contributors. It features six original programs, such as Tchia Poutou, Itinéraire Bis, On en Parle, Pop Corn & Pyjama, Quoi de neuf Doc, as well as fiction, short films, documentaries, and content aimed at young children. The project took four years to develop before its launch, though it faced some delays. The platform caters to an audience that often consumes media on their phones rather than in front of a television. Programs are available in both video and podcast formats, allowing users to watch or listen to content in different situations. According to a report, 85% of users access the platform through their smartphones. The platform aims to reshape the way youth in Mayotte are represented in media, focusing on social issues while also highlighting the contributions of individuals who are entrepreneurs, caregivers, educators, and community members who keep the island vibrant, even if they are not in the public eye. For children, the platform includes M'titi : mahoraise lullabies, an animated series that teaches the basics of the local language, shimaoré, with themes such as numbers, colors, emotions, weather, and everyday objects. The platform also dedicates a Friday each week to cultural content, emphasizing the importance of local traditions and heritage. WASSI MÉDIA is not limited to the productions of Jacqueline Djoumoi-Guez's team; it also serves as a hub for local talent and creativity. Its economic model relies on local advertising, offering space for companies that want to reach this audience. Advertisers can either use existing ads or request the platform to create new content for them. The platform claims to provide advertisers with data about their audience, including age ranges, gender, and the location from which the content was accessed. The platform is currently freely accessible online, with an app planned for release on both Android and Apple devices. The team now aims to grow the platform by introducing new programs and providing a lasting platform for Mahorais talent and storytelling. Initially, the goal is to become a leading media source for the youth of Mayotte, and if successful, the platform may eventually expand its reach to other parts of the Indian Ocean region.
