In a reimagining of the classic 1996 Tomb Raider game, players step into the shoes of Lara Croft as she explores a setting inspired by the UNESCO-listed monasteries of Meteora in Greece. The game, titled Legacy of Atlantis, is developed jointly by Crystal Dynamics and Polish studio Flying Wild Hog. The opening sequence shows Lara navigating a crumbling monastery filled with bats and environmental challenges, highlighting new gameplay elements. While the game introduces modern mechanics such as an environmental scanner that helps solve puzzles, some players feel this changes the original game's eerie atmosphere of isolation. Raul Siqueira, game director at Crystal Dynamics, explained that the developers are thinking about what the original creators might have done with today's technology. Arek Tomaszewski, art director at Flying Wild Hog, noted that the original game's sense of isolation was partly due to technological limitations, similar to the fog in Silent Hill. The team aims to create environments that make players feel like they are the first to discover them in centuries. Lara Croft now has new abilities, such as crafting balms and preparing stat-boosting stews from a menu, a feature similar to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Other modern additions include a grappling hook, RPG-style stats, skill trees, and quick-time events, which have sparked mixed reactions. The combat system has been overhauled, featuring more dynamic encounters, such as a leopard ambush with realistic agility and counterattacks. The game also promises a deeper narrative, with easter eggs and a voice performance by Alix Wilton Regan, known for her roles in Dragon Age: Inquisition and Cyberpunk 2077. The game’s publisher, Amazon, is also involved in a forthcoming Tomb Raider TV show produced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, hinting at possible connections between the two projects. A demo of the game ends with a tease of a vast, ancient civilization. Tomaszewski mentioned that the project has influenced the studio’s approach, learning pacing techniques from Crystal Dynamics. While the game is visually impressive, some players question whether the original simplicity of Lara’s gameplay contributed to her charm. If the game offers an option to disable modern mechanics for a more traditional experience, it could still find success with fans of the original.
