A day dedicated to women in sports kicks off in Borgo, aiming to boost female participation and leadership in Corsica's sports scene.
Event highlights women in sports
On Sunday, October 25, the Departmental Olympic and Sports Committee (CDOS) of Haute-Corse will host an event in Borgo to focus on the role of women in sports. The day will include stands from clubs and associations showcasing their activities and the women who lead them.Former athlete supports cause
Nathalie Desmares, a former snowboarder who competed in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, will serve as the event’s godmother. She emphasized that while sports remain a male-dominated field, women have an important place in it and can thrive in various disciplines.Leadership gap identified
Barthélémy Corneli, president of the CDOS of Haute-Corse, noted that fewer women hold leadership roles in sports associations and that many young girls leave sports when they reach a certain age. He stressed that these challenges are not inevitable and that women can be active in all sports disciplines.Long-term plan for change
The event is part of a larger effort by the CDOS to promote gender equality in sports over the next two years. The committee plans to hold similar meetings in different regions of the island to encourage a sustainable evolution in the sports movement.Focus on future leadership
Corneli also mentioned that after the 2028 Olympics, the next elections for sports governing bodies should reflect greater gender equality. He emphasized the need to prepare for this change now by empowering women to take on leadership roles in sports.
