The JBL Xtreme 5 is the latest addition to JBL's line of rugged, portable speakers, positioned just below the larger Boombox 4. Designed as a more durable and advanced version of the Xtreme 4, the Xtreme 5 retains the same rugged, no-frills aesthetic but introduces several improvements. It now features an IP68 certification, which means it can withstand being submerged in water up to 1.5 meters deep for 30 minutes, as well as being more resistant to dust and shocks. The speaker also has a more robust chassis, a slightly larger size, and a redesigned sound system aimed at enhancing bass performance. One of its standout new features is customizable LED lighting, something not previously available in this speaker format. The Xtreme 5 maintains the signature look of the Xtreme 4, with its mesh fabric cover, shoulder strap, and cylindrical shape. However, it is slightly larger and heavier, weighing 2.9 kg and measuring 34.6 x 16.5 x 15.5 cm. This increase in size is due to a more advanced sound architecture and additional side reinforcements to protect its passive radiators. The speaker's upper section now features a large silicone module that includes controls and hooks, though this design can collect dust and requires regular cleaning. Despite this, the reinforced build and more rigid plastic front give the Xtreme 5 a strong sense of durability. While not as small as a truly pocket-sized speaker, the Xtreme 5 is still easy to carry thanks to its included shoulder strap, which allows it to be attached to backpacks or carried on a strap. The IP68 certification ensures it can handle more extreme conditions than the previous model, though users should be cautious with the USB-C port, as it lacks a waterproof cover and must be fully dry before charging. Connectivity features are also up-to-date, with support for Bluetooth 6.0, LE Audio, and Auracast, allowing for multi-speaker synchronization and improved audio sharing. The Xtreme 5 features a single, larger woofer in the center of its front face, flanked by two tweeters on either side. This configuration, combined with larger passive radiators, enhances bass extension and overall sound quality. When plugged in, the speaker delivers 130 W of power, with 90 W for the woofer and 20 W for each tweeter. On battery, this drops to 60 W for the woofer and 15 W for each tweeter. The JBL Portable app offers customizable lighting and a seven-band equalizer, though its main functions are straightforward. The physical controls are now integrated into the silicone upper panel, making it easier to manage volume, playback, and Bluetooth pairing. The Xtreme 5 delivers a balanced and powerful sound, with a slight emphasis on the bass and treble without overwhelming the midrange. Its bass response extends down to 40 Hz, comparable to the Boombox 4, making it suitable for larger spaces or outdoor use. The treble is detailed but can be a bit bright on certain tracks, though it doesn't distort vocals. The speaker can produce over 85 dB of sound without compression, offering impressive dynamics and clarity. Despite its directional sound and some limitations in off-axis performance, the Xtreme 5 is a robust and capable speaker with a 24-hour battery life, which can be extended further with an optional extra battery. Priced at €349.99, it offers strong value for its performance and durability.
