Regional Council elects new president

The Regional Council of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur met on Monday, October 12, to choose a new president after Renaud Muselier left for the Senate. François de Canson is the only declared candidate so far.

Transition prepared in advance

The transition was planned by the right and center majority, which faces opposition from the far right. The 123 regional counselors were expected to vote for the successor of Renaud Muselier, who stepped down after being elected to the Senate on September 27.

François de Canson likely to succeed

François de Canson, mayor of La Londe-les-Maures and third vice-president of the region, is expected to become president unless a surprise occurs. His election depends on the assembly's vote, and he is currently the only declared candidate.

Succession prepared months in advance

Renaud Muselier had already chosen François de Canson as his successor several months before his Senate election. The outgoing president secured the support of his majority, and the transition appears well-organized, though the vote on Monday will finalize it.

Right and center hold majority

The balance of power in the regional assembly favors the right and center. In the 2021 elections, Renaud Muselier's list won 84 out of 123 seats, while the National Rally, led by Thierry Mariani, won 39. The current majority includes 83 members, with 35 from the National Rally and its allies, and five non-attached members.

Left has no formal group

The left does not have a formal group in the assembly. In 2021, the ecologist Jean-Laurent Félizia’s list withdrew between the two rounds to prevent the National Rally from gaining more seats.

Election threshold and process

To win on the first round, François de Canson needs at least 62 votes. The same threshold applies to the second round. If a third round is needed, the candidate with the most votes wins. Only the regional counselors vote, not the general public.

François de Canson’s experience

François de Canson has been mayor of La Londe-les-Maures since 2008 and a regional councilor since 2015. He has experience in areas like economic development, tourism, and risk prevention.

Future plans and unity

In an interview with Made in Marseille in April, François de Canson said he wants to continue Renaud Muselier’s work while adding his own touch. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining the majority’s unity, especially with regional elections in 2028 approaching.

Other council decisions

The session also included the renewal of the permanent committee and the appointment of vice-presidents. While the new president’s name is the main focus, the composition of his team will also be a key issue. Renaud Muselier will remain a regional councilor despite his Senate seat.
