Cold snap approaching France

France is set to experience a significant drop in temperature as the All Saints' Day holiday approaches, with a polar air mass coming from the northeast causing temperatures to fall by 10 to 15 degrees between Thursday and the following weekend.

Dry conditions persist despite cold

Despite this cold snap, the Azores anticyclone is blocking disturbances, keeping the weather dry across much of the territory, except for a localized rainy episode along the Mediterranean coast.

Severe drought continues

The drought remains severe, with 66 percent of groundwater observation points below normal levels and 64,000 residents without access to drinking water.

Rainfall deficits worsen drought

September showed a rainfall deficit of nearly 70 percent, making it the third driest September since measurements began in 1958. Since March, no month has been surplus in precipitation, with marked deficits in April, June, and July.

Groundwater levels remain critically low

At the beginning of October, recharge had only begun at 7 percent of the monitored points, compared to 30 percent at the same time last year. On the ground, the consequences are already concrete, with 64,000 residents still without access to tap water, and a VigiEau network that recorded 79 departments in crisis and 14 under reinforced alert.

Cold weather continues into the school holidays

La Chaîne Météo's updated bulletin on October 14 at 7:52 a.m. confirms this configuration for the start of the school holidays. A north to northeast flow will establish itself, causing a noticeable drop in temperatures across the entire country.

Dry cold persists with morning risks

The weather will, however, remain often dry, with a variable sky for much of the time. It is better to prepare warm clothing rather than rain gear for the first days of the holidays. Outdoor activities remain possible, but in the morning, temperature differences will be marked, with a risk of localized frosts in certain regions. Special caution is required for early morning travel, where visibility can be reduced by the formation of fog linked to this thermal contrast.

Drought and cold are separate issues

This cooling marks a break with the persisting mildness of recent months, without resolving the water crisis affecting much of the territory. The two phenomena follow different logic, and it would be risky to confuse them.

Adaptation and water conservation needed

Until a more favorable evolution occurs on the precipitation front, it is better to adapt to this dry cold by adjusting habits, without relaxing vigilance on water conservation.
