La Loire-Atlantique recorded 10.1 million overnight stays during the summer of 2026, despite an unusually warm and dry season. The average temperature between June and August reached 23.4 °C, which is 4.3 °C higher than the 1991-2020 average. Precipitation was 59 % below normal, creating conditions that are far from typical for the region. However, the number of tourists visiting the area remained largely stable, with 78 % of overnight stays coming from French visitors, especially from the Île-de-France region and the Grand Ouest. Tourist behavior is adapting to both climate change and financial pressures. While the region experienced a warm and dry summer, it remained an attractive destination. Day trips have increased, with 8.3 million recorded in July and August, a 6 % rise compared to 2025. This trend reflects a growing preference for shorter trips, possibly due to rising travel costs. Locally, professionals in the tourism sector note a decline in traditional dining experiences, suggesting that visitor spending patterns are shifting. The source of visitors is also changing. Since 2022, overnight stays from the Occitanie region have increased by 35 %, and those from Nouvelle-Aquitaine have risen by 16 %. This shift indicates that tourism in La Loire-Atlantique is becoming more diverse. Meanwhile, 62 % of vacationers nationally reported reducing their travel budgets compared to 2025, further influencing on-site spending and consumption patterns. In response to these changes, many professionals in the region have implemented measures to cope with high temperatures. Seventy-three percent of those surveyed have introduced at least one adaptation strategy, focusing on visitor comfort, activity scheduling, and opening hours. These adjustments reflect a growing awareness of the need to adapt to both environmental and economic challenges in the tourism sector.
