Sainsbury's has recalled its Inspired to Cook by Sainsbury's Pitted Black Olives after the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, a harmful bacteria, was detected in the product. The affected items are 120g tubs with use-by dates of September 6, September 7, and September 10, 2026. Customers are being advised not to eat the product and to return it to any Sainsbury's store for a full refund. The supermarket has confirmed that no other products are involved in the recall. Listeria monocytogenes can cause a condition known as listeriosis, which is a rare but potentially serious illness. Symptoms are often similar to the flu and may include fever, muscle aches, chills, nausea, and diarrhea. In some cases, especially among vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, newborns, and people with weakened immune systems, the infection can lead to more severe complications, including meningitis. The Food Standards Agency has issued a warning about the risks associated with Listeria monocytogenes, emphasizing that the bacteria can be found in certain ready-to-eat foods. These include cold meats, cured fish, soft cheeses, pâtés, pre-made sandwiches, salads, and pre-sliced fruits. The NHS notes that these foods are particularly prone to contamination, especially if they are not stored or handled properly. Sainsbury's is working closely with food safety authorities to ensure the recall is effective and to prevent any further risk to consumers. The company has emphasized that the affected product is the only one involved in this recall, and customers are being encouraged to check their use-by dates and return any affected items immediately.
