Stellantis partners with Chinese manufacturer Leapmotor

Stellantis, a major automotive group, has deepened its relationship with Chinese automaker Leapmotor, granting it access to several European factories. At the 2026 Paris Motor Show, the public saw new Leapmotor models in Europe for the first time, alongside an electric concept from Opel, which is developing SUVs in collaboration with the Chinese company.

Peugeot chooses a different path

Within Stellantis, Peugeot has opted for a distinct strategy, choosing not to use Leapmotor technology for its European models. While Opel prepares to launch a compact SUV developed with Leapmotor and produced in Spain, Peugeot insists on relying on its own technical and industrial foundations in Europe.

Stellantis invests heavily in Leapmotor

As early as 2023, Stellantis invested nearly 1.5 billion euros to acquire about 20% of Leapmotor and form a joint venture called Leapmotor International. This entity, controlled 51% by Stellantis and 49% by Leapmotor, has exclusive rights to sell and produce Leapmotor models outside of China, with Europe as a key market.

Opel's new SUV is a joint effort

The future Opel compact SUV, approximately 4.50 meters long, is being developed with components from Leapmotor. Opel retains control over the chassis, steering, lighting, seats, design, and ergonomics, while Leapmotor contributes its expertise in electronic systems, batteries, and electric powertrains.

Peugeot rejects Leapmotor for European models

At the 2026 Paris Motor Show, Alain Favey, general director of Peugeot, explicitly stated that the brand has no intention of using Leapmotor technology for European models. This decision underscores Peugeot's commitment to maintaining a distinct identity within Stellantis and reinforcing its European roots.

Peugeot relies on its own European technology

Peugeot is developing its future European models using its own technical base, including the new STLA One electric platform. This will form the foundation for the next-generation Peugeot 208 and 2008 models, without relying on Leapmotor technology. However, Peugeot is still collaborating with Chinese partners for projects outside of Europe.
