A new theatrical production titled Medee/s delves into the complex themes of motherhood, social pressure, and infanticide, created through the collaboration of actress Rachida Brakni and director Louise Vignaud. The play tackles a sensitive and often avoided topic in modern society, offering a portrayal of a mother's inner turmoil between societal expectations, feelings of isolation, and the desire to disappear. It draws inspiration from both the ancient Greek tragedy by Euripides, known as Medea, and contemporary reflections found in the documentary Mères à perpétuité by Sofia Fischer, which explores the lives of women who have committed infanticide. The production uses a multidisciplinary approach, incorporating contributions from various artists. Cellist and sound creator Orane Duclos, illustrator Irène Vignaud, lighting designer Nicolas Hénault, and costume designer Alex Costantino all play roles in shaping the sensory and multifaceted stage experience. The play is described as one that challenges and unsettles audiences, using a variety of artistic elements to provoke thought and emotion. Medee/s is produced by Compagnie La Résolue and will be performed at several venues across France. The first run begins at the Theatre des Bernardines in Marseille from 3 to 14 November 2026, followed by performances at the Theatre d'Arles on 18 and 19 November 2026. Additional shows are scheduled at the Theatre de la Commune in Aubervilliers from 11 to 18 December 2026, and later at the Festival of Tragedies in Nice in June 2027. This production aims to bring attention to the often-overlooked emotional and psychological struggles faced by mothers, using both classical and modern influences to create a powerful and thought-provoking theatrical experience.
