ITA Airways resumes Rome-Caracas route

ITA Airways will launch a non-stop flight between Rome-Fiumicino Airport and Caracas on March 30, 2027. The service will operate three times a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, using Airbus A330-900 aircraft.

Restoring a discontinued connection

The new route restores a service that was last operated by Alitalia in 2015. Alitalia had suspended the route in 2015 due to financial and regulatory challenges, particularly related to repatriating revenue from Venezuela.

Aircraft and passenger capacity

The Airbus A330-900 aircraft will carry 291 passengers, with seating divided into 30 business class seats, 24 Premium Economy seats, and 237 economy seats. Fiumicino Airport will act as a hub for passengers connecting to other destinations in ITA Airways' network.

Delay and potential reasons

The launch was initially expected in the autumn of 2026 but has been postponed to early 2027. The delay may be linked to damage caused by earthquakes to Simón-Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetía, which affected several airlines' operations in June.

Diplomatic support and purpose

The announcement included a memorandum of understanding signed by ITA Airways' CEO and the Venezuelan ambassador to Italy. The route aims to serve the Italian community in Venezuela, support Italian businesses, and boost commercial and tourist exchanges between the two countries.

Expanding South American presence

ITA Airways currently operates flights from Rome to Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo. Adding Caracas will expand its South American network beyond Argentina and Brazil, providing Venezuelans with a new European entry point alongside existing services from Madrid.
