Rockstar Games, the developer behind the popular Grand Theft Auto (GTA) series, is reportedly exploring the idea of creating real-world versions of Vice City, a fictional city from the upcoming GTA 6. Since Vice City is heavily inspired by Miami, Florida, Rockstar is in talks with Miami-Dade County officials to transform parts of the city into themed attractions, using public areas and county-owned buildings as part of the experience. The proposal comes as a potential marketing strategy to leverage the global popularity of the GTA franchise, which has millions of players worldwide. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava’s spokesperson mentioned that the plan could offer a unique opportunity to generate revenue for the county while showcasing Miami’s culture and attractions to a massive audience. The idea would involve turning real locations into interactive experiences that mirror the virtual world of Vice City, blending real and fictional elements for tourists and fans of the game. However, the proposal has faced strong opposition from local law enforcement and officials. Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz has criticized the idea, pointing out that the GTA series is centered around criminal activities such as murder, robbery, drug trafficking, and violence against police. She argues that promoting such themes through real-world locations could send the wrong message and undermine the work of law enforcement. Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez supports the sheriff’s concerns, stating that Miami-Dade should focus on promoting the real community it has built, rather than a fictional version defined by crime and violence. Additionally, county officials from the judicial system, including Chief Judge Ariana Fajardo and Clerk Juan Fernandez-Barquin, have expressed reservations about using courthouses and other government buildings in a promotional campaign tied to a game that glorifies criminal behavior. They believe that such institutions should not be associated with a fictional portrayal of crime and law enforcement. While the proposal is still under discussion and not yet finalized, the fact that Rockstar considered it highlights the extent to which the GTA franchise influences real-world marketing and public perception.
