Chinese automakers dominate Paris Motor Show

The 2026 Paris Motor Show, held in October, saw a major shift in the automotive industry, with 25 of the 61 participating manufacturers being Chinese. This marked more than a third of the exhibitors at the event.

Traditional automakers skip the show

Major historical automakers like BMW, Toyota, and Porsche did not participate in the 2026 Paris Motor Show, while new Asian automakers displayed large stands exceeding 1,000 square meters.

Chinese brands target both ends of the market

Chinese manufacturers are focusing on both affordable and high-end segments of the market. At the lower end, they offer city cars priced at 20,000 euros, such as the Geely E2 and the Leapmotor B03, which is sold in Europe through a partnership with Stellantis.

High-end models showcase advanced technology

On the high end, Chinese brands are introducing family SUVs with advanced technological features, such as the BYD Atto 8. This model has a 115 kWh battery that can charge from 10 to 80% in just 6 minutes on ultra-fast charging stations.

Environmental incentives pose a challenge

One challenge for Chinese automakers in France is the absence of an environmental bonus for vehicles made in Asia. This could affect the quality-price ratio of their vehicles in the French market.

Chinese brands plan European production

To overcome these barriers and gain the government’s Écoscore, several Chinese brands are planning to open factories in Europe by 2027 or 2028. For example, Cherry will assemble vehicles in Barcelona, aiming to relaunch price competition in the market.
