Fuel and firework sales banned

The prefecture of Saône-et-Loire has banned the sale of fuel in jerrycans and fireworks in ten cities for a limited period, following recent violence in Chalon-sur-Saône and Mâcon. The restrictions aim to prevent potential unrest linked to planned demonstrations over the weekend of October 24 and 25.

Restrictions apply to ten cities

The ban applies to ten cities, including Autun, Blanzy, Chalon-sur-Saône, Digoin, Le Creusot, Louhans, Mâcon, Montceau-les-Mines, Paray-le-Monial, and Torcy. It is in effect from Friday, October 23 at 6 p.m. to Monday, October 26 at 7 a.m.

Prefecture website unavailable

The orders were published on a rescue platform after the prefecture's website became unavailable due to a technical issue. The problem was caused by a critical vulnerability in a commonly used software component.

Interior ministry takes preventive action

The Ministry of the Interior placed its websites in preventive maintenance at the request of the National Agency for Information System Security (ANSSI), following the vulnerability discovered in the prefecture's system.

Orders can be contested

The restrictions can be challenged within two months before the administrative court in Dijon. This provides a legal avenue for those affected by the measures to seek redress if they believe the restrictions are unjustified.

Violence linked to previous demonstrations

The restrictions follow episodes of urban violence in Chalon-sur-Saône and Mâcon over the previous weekend. Demonstrators threw projectiles and fireworks at law enforcement, set fires in public buildings, vehicles, and waste containers.

Security forces on high alert

Security forces are expected to be heavily mobilized due to a high terrorist threat and multiple simultaneous social movements. The measures aim to prevent the escalation of violence and ensure public safety.

Fuel sale restrictions detailed

The first order prohibits the retail sale of domestic fuels, including flammable gas and petroleum products in any transportable container. Filling a vehicle remains allowed, but filling a canister is not. Exemptions apply to agricultural operators and professionals with a declared need for fuel.

Fireworks restrictions detailed

The second order prohibits the purchase, sale, possession, and transport of fireworks in categories F2, F3, F4, and pyrotechnic items P1 and P2. Their use in public spaces is also banned, with exemptions for professionals justifying a pyrotechnic show and individuals with authorized fireworks.

Penalties for violations

Offenders who violate the restrictions may face penalties under the Penal Code. The measures aim to prevent fires, unnecessary alerts, and the potential masking of gunshots during a real attack.
