Asus launches new portable console-PC hybrid

Asus has introduced the ROG Xbox Ally X20, a portable console-PC hybrid, as part of the 20th anniversary of its Republic of Gamers (ROG) brand. The device was unveiled at Computex in June and is now available in France for 1,400 euros.

New design and display features

The ROG Xbox Ally X20 includes a 7.4-inch OLED screen, replacing the LCD screen of previous models. This screen provides better color accuracy, higher peak brightness, and HDR compatibility, along with an anti-reflective coating to reduce glare.

Ergonomic improvements

The device features a redesigned directional pad that can be used as an eight-direction cross, ideal for fighting games. Joysticks now use TMR sensors, which improve precision and eliminate drift. The handles have better grip, and the device is slightly wider, making it incompatible with previous cases.

Internal specifications and cooling

The internal components of the ROG Xbox Ally X20 remain largely the same as the previous model, including an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24 GB of RAM, and a 1 TB SSD. The cooling system has been updated to handle the increased heat from the OLED screen.

Software and compatibility

The device runs on Windows 11 with an Xbox mode optimized for gaming and an Asus ROG overlay. While the software interface has not seen major improvements, the device is compatible with SteamOS, which can be installed for enhanced performance and comfort.

Price and value concerns

The higher price of the ROG Xbox Ally X20 has sparked debate about whether the improvements justify the cost. Critics note that while the OLED screen and ergonomic upgrades are notable, the lack of significant technical upgrades and missing accessories may be seen as drawbacks.
