Rail operator LNER has introduced new early-bird and late-night rail fares for journeys between London and Leeds, priced at £12. These fares are available for the 5.40am train from London King’s Cross to Leeds and the 9.10pm return service from Leeds to London, Monday to Friday. Travelers with a railcard can purchase the discounted tickets for £8 as part of a new trial. LNER claims these fares are the lowest between the two cities in nearly two decades. The train journey takes around two hours and 13 minutes, which is about half the time of a National Express coach journey, which usually takes between three hours and 50 minutes to four hours and 20 minutes. LNER is encouraging customers to book their seats in advance to ensure availability, as the demand for these low-cost tickets may be high. The rail operator also recommends using Beryl Bikes and e-scooters upon arrival at Leeds station as a convenient, eco-friendly, and enjoyable way to explore the city. David Flesher, commercial director at LNER, said the new fares are a competitive alternative to coach travel, offering both speed and affordability. He highlighted the attractions in Leeds, such as the Leeds Art Gallery, Trinity Centre, and various entertainment venues, as reasons for Londoners to consider visiting the city repeatedly. In February, LNER introduced brand new trains on the East Coast Main Line, replacing a fleet that had been in service for nearly 40 years. The new 10 intercity trains will operate on the route from London King’s Cross to Edinburgh, featuring customer-suggested improvements. These Class 897 trains are the first new fleet introduced as part of Great British Railways (GBR), a nationalized rail authority set to replace the current model dominated by private operators. The Class 897 trains will be branded with GBR logos both inside and outside the carriages. This marks a significant shift in the UK rail system, as the new fleet aims to modernize services and provide a more unified rail experience across the country. The introduction of these trains reflects LNER’s ongoing efforts to improve the quality and efficiency of rail travel for passengers.
