Artiste Guillaume Mika is returning to the Scene de recherche with Cataphonie, an experimental theater production that examines the relationship between science and performance. The play follows two spelunkers and a bioacoustician who enter a cave, only to encounter an unusual, moving sound instead of the bats they expected. The group must adjust to this mysterious phenomenon, sharing resources and learning to live and work together while dealing with the resonant frequencies they encounter.
In 2025, Mika participated in a survival experiment at sea organized by the association au Rad’lo in partnership with the CRAPEM and the Human Adaptation Institute, led by Christian Clôt. The experiment involved 25 civilians on an inflatable raft drifting in the Mediterranean for between 2 and 6 days. The goal was to improve survival equipment, enhance care for shipwrecked individuals, and gather data on cognitive biases in survival situations. Participants used two rugged dictaphones to record their experiences, sharing the recordings with others involved in the project.
Cataphonie features actors Chloé Lasne, Yitu Tchang, and Simon Anglès. It includes dramaturgical contributions from Sarah Brannens and Samuel Roger, with lighting and stage management by Julien Crépin. Sound design and music are by Pierre Tanguy, and video work is by Salma Bordes. Costumes are designed by Aliénor Figueiredo, and the production includes eco-acoustic accompaniment by Adèle de Baudouin. Researchers Lucia Di Iorio, Daniele Schön, Nicolas Farrugia, Jerôme Sueur, Léa Mariton, and Marion Trousselard have also contributed to the project. Special thanks are given to Mathilde Cordier, Gaëlle and Pascal Mika, Pierre Tremerel, and Alexandra Cismondi, as well as to spelunkers Robert Durand, Didier Perrin, Frank Prévost, Marcel Paul, Jean-Jacques Veux, and Jean-Claude Pascouet.
The production is by the Production Company des Trous dans la Tête and includes co-productions from Châteauvallon-Liberté scène nationale (Toulon), Hexagone scène nationale (Meylan), Théâtre La passerelle scène Nationale de Gap et des Alpes du Sud, La Scène de recherche / Théâtre – Paris-Saclay, Théâtre de Vanves, and La Grange – Centre/Arts et Sciences/UNIL (Lausanne, Switzerland). Institutional support comes from Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Région Sud Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Département du Var, Métropole Toulon-Provence-Méditerranée, and Ville de Toulon. The project was recognized at the 2025 Artist Discovery Day by La Pop in partnership with the Théâtre de Vanves, Danse Dense, and the theatre Les Gémeaux – Scène Nationale de Sceaux.
