Events honor Giuseppe Sinopoli

Rome has organized a series of events to celebrate Giuseppe Sinopoli on the 80th anniversary of his birth. These events highlight his diverse career as a physician, psychiatrist, criminologist, composer, archaeologist, and conductor.

Exhibition explores Sinopoli's work

An exhibition titled Sinopoli/Wagner opened on October 21 at the Santa Cecilia hall in the Auditorium Parco della Musica. It features previously unseen materials from the Academy's archives and coincided with the start of the symphonic season.

Symphonic season begins with Wagner

The symphonic season began with a performance of Wagner's Siegfried, conducted by Daniel Harding and directed by Vincent Huguet. This choice was significant, as Sinopoli had previously conducted the complete Ring cycle in concert in Rome.

Concerts and discussions honor Sinopoli

On October 22, a day of meetings and concerts brought together musicians, critics, and those close to Sinopoli. His wife, Silvia Cappellini Sinopoli, performed his Klaviersonate during the event, and a visit to the Aristaios museum showcased his archaeological work.

Sinopoli's unfinished academic work

Sinopoli was preparing a thesis on the architecture of ancient Mesopotamia, which he was scheduled to defend on April 23, 2001. He died three days earlier of a heart attack during a performance of Aida at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin.

Unique interpretations of music

Sinopoli's interpretations of music were shaped by his scientific background, leading to both fascination and controversy. Some critics believed he bent scores to his theories, while others appreciated his fresh perspective on familiar works.

Sinopoli's operatic recordings

His operatic discography includes both acclaimed performances, such as Salome, Elektra, Manon Lescaut, Tosca, and Der fliegende Holländer, and less successful ones, including La forza del destino, Rigoletto, and Carmen.

Documentary honors Sinopoli's legacy

On October 23, a documentary titled Il ghiaccio in tasca. Mio padre Giuseppe Sinopoli was presented. Directed by his son Giovanni Sinopoli, it features family footage and testimonials from notable figures in music and film.

Aristaios museum continues tribute

Until November 2, the day of his 80th birthday, the Aristaios museum will display audiovisual documents from RAI archives. According to his son, Sinopoli viewed medicine, music, and archaeology as three ways to explore the human heart.
