Racing game returns after 30 years
The racing game Scud Race, originally released in 1996, is getting a new life with a modern port developed by Wanszai. The game, known as Sega Super GT in regions outside the Atlantic, is now available on PC, Xbox 360, and Xbox Series X, offering console versions that were missing when it first launched on Sega’s Saturn and Dreamcast systems.Developer uses new technology
Wanszai, a studio known for porting arcade classics like Ridge Racer and Sega Rally, used artificial intelligence to decompile the Sega Model 3 arcade system’s code. This approach allows the game to run natively on modern hardware, avoiding the high processor demands of traditional emulators and preserving the original driving physics and vehicle behavior.Players need original files
To play Scud Race, users must provide the original ROM file (scud.zip) in the installation directory. Including the Daytona USA 2: Power Edition archive (dayto2pe.zip) unlocks the Hornet car directly in the game, adding extra content for players.Modern features enhance gameplay
The port includes options to maintain the original arcade resolution (496x384) or scale up to 8K, with support for surround sound, personalized soundtracks, and various screen ratios. It also supports modern and older peripherals for precise feedback and includes local multiplayer (System Link) and online play with cross-platform competition.Future updates planned
Wanszai is considering future updates, such as virtual reality and split-screen support. The project is currently available for download on the official Wanszai GitHub repository, allowing fans to access and contribute to the development.
