A senior NHS surgeon, Dr Muhammad Khalil, has been suspended for nine months after a tribunal found him guilty of sharing antisemitic content on Instagram. The posts, which included highly offensive language and statements such as "You can shove your Torah, your Talmud, your Moses and all your prophets up your stinky ass," were described as "seriously offensive" and "objectively antisemitic" by the Medical Practitioners’ Tribunal Service. The tribunal ruled that the content violated professional standards and posed a significant risk to public confidence in the medical profession.
Dr Khalil, who worked at an NHS hospital in Liverpool, made a series of posts that included claims that Muslims would eliminate Jews "completely from the face of the earth" and that the Israeli flag should be accompanied by the phrase "death to Israel." He also criticized the Jewish CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, and expressed views that "multi-billion dollar social media platforms were controlled by or adversely influenced by Jews," suggesting that the "real truth" was being suppressed. These comments were made in the context of the war in Gaza, which began in October 2023.
Dr Khalil, who qualified as a doctor in Egypt in 2001 and worked as a vascular surgery trainee before moving to the UK in 2015, had previously worked at the Royal Free Hospital and at Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. Concerns about his posts were raised with the General Medical Council (GMC) in October 2023, and the matter was reported to the police, though no formal action was taken. At the tribunal, Dr Khalil admitted that he would not repeat the posts, stating he was "emotional" and that it was a "mistake."
The tribunal chair, Malcolm Dodds, noted that the posts were "seriously offensive" and that Dr Khalil's misconduct would be regarded as "deplorable" by fellow medical professionals. The tribunal concluded that the level of risk to public protection was high, and that his suspension was necessary to maintain public confidence in the medical profession and uphold professional standards.
