Anthropic, a company specializing in artificial intelligence, has introduced a new feature that allows its AI model, Claude, to connect directly to a user's Gmail account. This connection enables Claude to perform a variety of email-related tasks, such as reading, drafting, and sending emails on behalf of the user. The feature is available to all users, including those on free plans, and requires a Google account login and permission granting to set it up. Once connected, Claude can search through a user's inbox, read emails, draft replies, send or forward messages, and even organize the inbox by applying labels and grouping related messages into threads. Users retain control over what Claude can do through customizable approval settings. By default, Claude will ask for user approval before performing any action such as sending an email, replying to a message, or forwarding an email. However, users can modify these settings to either require approval for every action or allow Claude to perform certain tasks without needing permission each time. For users on Team or Enterprise plans, account owners have additional control, allowing them to determine whether members can perform these actions without being prompted every time. Individual users can also manage these permissions directly from the chat interface, turning specific tools on or off as needed. The setup process is straightforward: users simply need to access the Claude app or website, go to the connectors section, select Gmail, and follow the prompts to link their account. Once connected, users can ask Claude to handle a range of email tasks, such as finding the most recent email from a specific contact or drafting a reply. Approval settings can be customized per tool, with read-only tools set to "Always allow" by default and write/delete tools set to "Needs approval." Users can adjust these settings based on how much they trust the AI's performance, ensuring they maintain control over their email communications.
